What you believe about women determines how you treat the women in your life and how well you will get along with them. Likewise, what you believe about men determines how you will relate and get along with the men in your life. You beliefs about men and women determines how you treat your son, your daughter, your co-workers, and even the strangers you meet. It determines how you vote and how you feel about the people you do business with.

What you believe about yourself determines how you dress –whether your clothes are clean and fashionable and whether you shine your shoes. What you believe about love determines how much of it you give and receive. What you believe about success determines how much of it you have. What you believe about happiness determines if you are happy or not. What you believe about money determines how much you have.

We all have a tendency to sabotage situations in our lives, sometimes even subconsciously, to maintain our belief system and make sure we don’t live beyond our beliefs.

Your beliefs leave a trail that shows up in virtually every area of your life. Look at your life right now. Take some time to consider the way you live. Think about your belief system and how it affects your possessions, your relationships, your success, and your happiness. Maybe for the first time ever, you’ll know why your life is the way it is.

Have you ever asked yourself:

Why can’t I make the changes I really want so desperately in my life?

Why can’t I do it?

Whats wrong with me?

Whats holding me back?

If you’re not getting the results you want or expect out of your business or life, it is probably do to one (or more) of the following three things:

Limiting beliefs

Sabotaging Behaviors and Habits

Inadequate structure conducive to change

These things are so very personal and deeply ingrained into our psychological make-up, addressing these often requires the assistance of a third party. Here’s why: “scotomisation” is the psychological tendency in people to see what they want to see and not see what they don’t want to see -in situations, in themselves, in anything- due to the psychological impact that seeing (or not seeing) would inflict.

Perception involves seeing and processing information through the filter of our intellect and our emotions. That’s why people often see the same thing differently. Scotomisation can be a false denial but also a false affirmation of our perceptions.

Psychiatrist R. D. Laing (1927-1989) describes scotomisation as a process of an individual psychologically denying the existence of anything they see with their own eyes that they really don’t want to see and hence don’t want to believe.

Laing writes in Interpersonal Perception (1966) that scotomisation is “our ability to develop selective blind spots regarding certain kinds of emotional or anxiety-producing events”.

I’ve said all this simply to point out that we all need the help of people who are not ‘emotionally invested’ in maintaining that list of 3 things that hold us back. That help can come from friends (although, sometimes not truly objective themselves), Counselors, Ministers, or (shameless plug coming) an Executive Coach. By the way, I know a good one if you are interested.

Have a Great and Prosperous 2007 filled with positive change!
